THE FLAMING LIPS ANNOUNCE MORE SUMMER SHOWS

WEEZER & THE FLAMING LIPS ANNOUNCE EPIC “SIDE-BY-SIDE” CO-HEADLINING SETS FOR NEW JERSEY & LONG ISLAND JULY 28th & 29th RESPECTIVELY

NEW LIPS MUSIC AVAILABLE NOW

GUMMY FETUS HAS ARRIVED

July 11, 2011 – (Burbank, CA) – THE FLAMING LIPS continue to confirm additional concert dates to their current summer itinerary. All dates are listed below. The LIPS are fresh off their very special two-night engagement in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery where they played to ecstatic capacity crowds, The band performed THE SOFT BULLETIN in its entirety the first night and their version of Pink Floyd’s THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON (including spectacular vocal assistance from Peaches on a pair of Dark Side songs) on the second night. In addition, the LIPSadded a brief, stripped-down sunrise performance on the cemetery’s front lawn with assistance from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros on the morning of June 15th. Each of these events has been heavily documented in the media so check out YouTube for highlights.

An exclusive Flaming Lips (life-size) Gummy Skull, with USB drive featuring “The Soft Bulletin: Live La Fantastique de Institution 2011,” was available for this event. It’s very possible that some of these special Skulls may remain in stock so double check the LIPS Official Store and grab it up before it’s gone…forever.

Possibly the most exciting news of the summer is the confirmation of a pair of NY area co-headline shows with Weezer July 28, at PNC Bank Arts Center and July 29, at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater. This will be a first for both bands as they will take the stage together and trade off songs. Naturally, these will be very special events and most likely will never happen again. The only thing that can be predicted is to expect the unpredictable.  Yeasayer will provide support.

Commenting on these shows Wayne Coyne remarked: “The Flaming Lips and Weezer are playing a show together…where they are actually playing together.”  “I asked Wayne if he has an extra bubble I could ride in,” dared Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo.  Needless to say don’t miss these unprecedented, monumental happenings.

Artist uses 1,300 punching bags to depict Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali always said he was the prettiest thing that ever lived. He has a point. It does take a certain beauty to make 1,300 punching bags, five miles of stainless steel and two miles of aluminum tubing look like a work of art. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have a talented sculptor rendering those materials.

California artist Michael Kalish will unveil his Ali art installation, “reALIze,” later this month in Los Angeles. The project, which depicts the three-time heavyweight champ by using speed bags, stands two stories high, fills up 15,00 cubic feet and includes five miles of stainless steel, two miles of aluminum tubing and 1,300 of Ali’s favorite practice targets. Kalish told the Los Angeles Times that it took three months to design the sculpture and five months to build it.

Ali’s wife, Yolanda, approached Kalish three years ago after seeing his work with license plate art. He created a piece for the family which eventually led to this sculpture.

The final product will show for two weeks at Nokia Plaza in Los Angeles. From there, Kalish hopes to take it to other venues. Admission is free to the public, but visitors won’t be able to interact with the piece due to its intricate design.

Raphael Saadiq Set to Release His Fifth ‘Solo Album Stone Rollin’

Featuring ten new tracks, Stone Rollin’ is the follow up to Saadiq’s 2008 solo album The Way I See It, which boasted four Billboard R&B chart singles and was nominated for three GRAMMY Awards including Best R&B Album. The album was also selected by iTunes as their ‘Album of the Year’ in 2008. With the release of The Way I See It, Raphael Saadiq truly made his mark as a touring artist, striking a universal chord with audiences around the world through multiple performances at festival dates throughout Europe and the States — including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza, SXSW and Voodoo Experience — as well as a recent opening slot on the Dave Matthews Band’s amphitheater tour. Now with his new collection Stone Rollin’, Saadiq nods to his heroes like Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Little Walter and Sly Stone, while merging his own contemporary twist, one born out of a combination of his recent touring experiences, as well as inspiration derived from indie acts that hold regular rotation in his iPod. The end result is a collection that showcases Saadiq’s gifted musicality and the stellar production skills that have become the artist’s signature.

Raphael Saadiq says of the recording “Both the attraction and reaction to my music from my listeners has given me all that I need to continue pushing the envelope and making music that wakes and rocks the soul of many.  It’s ready,  I’m ready, and I know the world is ready.   Let’s all go Stone Rollin’.”

Recorded at his studio complex the Blakeslee Recording Company in Los Angeles, Raphael Saadiq played bass, mellotron, keys, guitar, percussion and even drums on most of the tracks. Opening with the stomping “Heart Attack,” the album’s other standout cuts include the stunning “Go To Hell,” featuring his studio squad of musicians who are melodically complimented by an angelic choir, the evocative Dixieland number “Day Dreams,” featuring Robert Randolph who plays steel guitar on the track, and “Just Don’t,” which includes a guest appearance from one of Saadiq’s indie rock favorites Swedish-Japanese singerYukimi Nagano (Little Dragon). Also making an appearance on that same song is one of Saadiq’s idols Larry Dunn (Earth, Wind & Fire), who plays piano and contributes an epic Moog solo.

Taio Cruz

Taio Cruz is a British Pop singer/songwriter whose second album, Rokstarr, catapulted him to international chart-topping success in 2010 with its smash hit singles “Break Your Heart” and “Dynamite.” Born Jacob Taio Cruz on April 23, 1983, in London, England, to a Nigerian father and a Brazilian mother, he went to school in Rugby, Warwickshire, West Midlands. His songwriting career got off to a quick start when he was signed to a publishing deal at age 19 and credited with co-writing Pop Idol winner Will Young’s 2004 Top Five hit single “Your Game,” the recipient of the 2005 Brit Award for Best British Single. In the wake of this success, Cruz made his debut as a solo artist in 2006 with the Top 30 single “I Just Wanna Know.” Initially released by his own label, Rokstarr Music London (later renamed Rokstarr Entertainment Division), the song earned him a major-label recording contract with Island Records. Following a couple more singles, “Moving On” and “Come on Girl,” the latter of which hit the Top Five, Cruz made his full-length album debut with Departure (2008). Entirely written and produced by the singer/songwriter himself, Departure spawned another two singles, “I Can Be” and “She’s Like a Star,” and earned favorable reviews. Prior to releasing his second album, Cruz furthered his reputation as a hitmaking songwriter. In addition to co-writing songs for British pop superstars Cheryl Cole (“Stand Up”) and JLS (“Keep You”), he penned material for grime rapper Tinchy Stryder’s second album, Catch 22 (2009), in particular the Top Five hit “Take Me Back” and the chart-topping smash “Never Leave You.” “Break Your Heart,” the lead single from Cruz’s second solo album, Rokstarr (2009), topped the U.K. singles chart in September, a month after “Never Leave You” vacated the spot, and third single “Dirty Picture” was another major hit, reaching the Top Ten.

K.R.I.T. WUZ HERE

Lyfe Jennings interviews with “Heavy Rotation Magazine

R&B/Soul singer, Lyfe Jennings interviews with “Heavy Rotation Magazine

Monday 8/30/10 4p est . Lyfe Jennings, will release what he has called his “final” studio album on August 31st via Jesus Swings/Asylum/Warner Bros. Records.  Executively produced by Lyfe Jennings, the album features contributions from Canadian producer T-Minus (Ludacris, Drake, LeToya Luckett), Brian Michael Cox, Erik Hudson and Troy Taylor.  Fellow soul-singer Anthony Hamilton, the album’s only feature, graces the soaring track “Hero.”

The 13-disc track is what Lyfe considers a reflection of his “greatness,” the magnum opus of a career that stirred up heart-felt and no-nonsense musings about social problems and the saving grace that is love.  Despite the personal and public trials in his life, Lyfe Jennings still believes in this love.  “I keep a lot going on.   It’s tragic; I think I have a horribly charmed life.  But I think God puts me through stuff and keeps me there so I can talk about it.”

He carries these experiences into the album.  “[The album] is about all kinds of relationships,” says Lyfe.  “How we try to hold on sometimes for the sake of holding on.  But, in reality, no matter how many breakups turn into make-ups, sooner or later we realize that this person is who they are and we need to let go.  No grudges, no regrets.  Just realization.  Just acceptance.  Just life.”

Kanye Calls Swizz Beatz The “Best Producer Of All Time”

Recently, Kanye West took it upon himself to let the whole world (via twitter) know that he declares Swizz Beatz the greatest producer of all time.

After his recent comments about Nicki Minaj having the potential to be the 2nd best rapper of all time behind Eminem, Ye has been inspired after listening to some Swizz Beatztracks to say this:

Listening to “Fancy” … This is a big statement but Swizz Beats may be the best rap producer of all time… f*** that… he is.  He’s original… He’s modern… he lives this s*** for real… he is rap… Yall gone see though… This Swizz year… Yall gone see

Although “Fancy” may have been a great song, do you believe that Swizz is one of the best producers of all time, or does he barely make your top 10? Let us know your take about Kanye’s recent thoughts under the comment section.

Hear New Prince Song On The Internet!

Just a few days ago, Prince told The Daily Mirror that the Internet was “completely over” in his not-so-humble opinion, but when you’ve got a new album to promote, it starts looking pretty cool, doesn’t it? I don’t know if his people officially released the song, but you can hear “Laydown,” off the upcoming 20Ten. It’s a candlelit grind of a funk track: distinct bassline, wah-wah synth flourishes and hilariously direct lines like “From the heart of Minnesota, here comes the purple Yoda.” Maybe he’s just trying to make sure no one can ever cover this song without feeling like a jackass. Martin Lawrence Weds Longtime Love

The one-time Bad Boy is reporting for duty as a good husband. Actor Martin Lawrence has married his longtime gal Shamicka Gibbs at a quiet ceremony at their home in Beverly Hills, People reports.

On hand were stars such as Eddie Murphy and Denzel Washington as well as family including the couple’s daughters Lyana and Ameria and Lawrence’s daughter Jasmine from a previous marriage.

No word yet on what dress the bride wore, but the good news is that the groom didn’t wear one, thankfully leaving his drag alter ego’s Sheneneh Jenkins and Big Momma off the guest list.

Kanye West Returns with New Single!

Ladies and gentleman, Kanye West is back. Thursday, the controversial rapper released “Power,” the first single off his upcoming album Good Ass Job, which is now confirmed to for a September 14 release.

The song — which West performed this past Sunday at the BET Awards — returns to the aggressive tribal beats and memorable, if egotistical and nasty, lyrics of the rapper’s pre-808s & Heartbreak era. “Fuck SNL and the whole cast,” he spits. “Tell ’em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass / More specifically, they can kiss my asshole.” He continues, “Stop trippin’, I’m trippin’ off the power / ‘Til then, fuck that, the world’s ours.”

Download the song from iTunes here and peep the single’s creepy artwork — a dead king’s decapitated head, eyes still open, with a sword stuck in its side — right here.

“Power” is the first new music from SPIN’s former Entertainer of the Year since 2008’s 808s & Heartbreak, and concludes the rapper’s self-inflicted exile following his now infamous “Imma-let-you-finish” moment with Taylor Swift at the MTV VMAs, nine months ago.

As the single emerges, more details about Good Ass Job have come to light. BET honcho Stephen Hill toldRap-Up.com that he heard four tracks from the record, including one featuring rapper Nicki Minaj. Common, Mos Def, Drake, Kid Cudi, RZA, Pete Rock, and DJ Premier are also expected to appear on the album.

Khia Is Taking The Drake Route, Shrugs Off Female Rap Resurgence

Just when Khia seems to have faded into oblivion she surprises us by popping back up (again) on TV.

Her first resurgence since the nasty-talk classic “My Neck, My Back” came via Vh1’s Miss Rap Surpreme in 2008. Being booted after one episode in for spitting written raps, she later made Internet headlines by blasting female counterparts like TrinaNicki Minaj and Jacki-O. However, most recently, it was her flamboyant costumes in the video for “Been a Bad Girl” and an appearance on ABC News that got people talking again and as it turns out, she’s full of more surprises.

“I’m kind of bored with hip-hop. I’ve done everything that I really wanted to do. I’m not really getting into the hip-hop stuff because it’s more about the drama than it is about the talent,” she tells VIBE about going in a new direction musically. “It’s more about the look and the images and all of that instead of about the art and I’m not really into that. I’m trying to do something bigger and better.”

She says her next album, a double disc LP titled Khia Shamone/Motor Mouf (in stores Aug. 22), will reflect her new interest, which is singing, while also staying true to her hardcore Thug Misses roots.

“The new album is half hip-hop and half R&B, with live instrumentation. The Motor Mouf side is kind of a follow up to Nasti MuzikThug MissesGangstressBoss Lady⎯really, what the fans are used to,” she says. “I’m also known as Khia Shamone, a lover of music, so I’m introducing them to me as a songstress, I’m singing. I wrote and composed the songs and the band is playing the music live.”

Khia is so serious about her new direction that when asked about the presence of other female emcees, she’s just as dumbfounded as everyone else.

Khia is so serious about her new direction that when asked about the presence of other female emcees, she’s just as dumbfounded as everyone else.

“Where are they?” she quips flippantly. “I don’t know where they are, I’m singing now.” The former Gangstress is currently touring with her band and also plans to allow a more intimate glimpse into her world via reality TV. She leaked a trailer online last year but that was just a test to gage interest. Potential business partners have come knocking but Khia is waiting until she makes the right deal.

“Everybody’s so ready for Anger Management. I’ve been touring and trying to get my music done in the studio recording. I’m dealing with lawyers and everybody right now [but] I haven’t been able to really get the deal that I want and the numbers that I want,” she says. “It’s not just about being on TV, it’s about making sure you’re getting your money so once the deal goes through, we’re making it happen.”

But as far as her music goes, she says getting brand-new isn’t a bad thing. “Of course I wanted to give my fans the Khia and the Mouth all Mighty that they’re used to,” she muses. “[But] I don’t want to just be known as hip-hop or a rapper or an emcee, I want to be known as an artist and a female that creates music and melodies through words.”

Tyrese Off the Hook for Smashup

Tyrese Gibson is gonna act like the innocent man he’s always been.

Miami prosecutors have dropped a felony citation against the “How You Gonna Act Like That” crooner for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident last month. The move came after his lawyers presented photos and other evidence showing Tyrese did nothing wrong.

“They will take no further action,” the 31-year-old R&B star’s attorney, Jayne Weintraub, tells E! News.

Gibson’s accident occurred on Jan. 4. The woman he hit, Sheena McCleary, claimed she suffered injuries and cops were called to the scene for a routine investigation and the usual exchange of insurance info.

However, officers subsequently slapped felony citations on both motorists for “leaving the scene on public or private property” where an injury occurred when the two strangers shared a taxi afterward.

According to the singer’s attorney, the citations should never have been issued in the first place and was the result of a police mix-up.

“I gave them a whole packet that showed the pictures at the scene,” Weintraub says, noting paparazzi photos clearly depicted Tyrese being present with officers.

“[Tyrese] complied with every request police made. In Florida you have certain requirements before police let you go…but what happened was there was a shift change right in the middle of the accident and cop A didn’t know what cop B was doing,” Weintraub adds.

District attorney spokeswoman Terry Chavez says prosecutors consider the matter closed.

“There was absolutely no evidence. They stayed at the scene.  They got their traffic tickets, and that was that,” she tells E! News. “We just feel they complied with the requirements of the statute and…we could find no crime that was committed.”
